Google AI Overviews & AI Mode

Widest reach of all

48% of tracked queries return an AI Overview

Where it gets answersGoogle’s own index, re-ranked by Gemini using query fan-out — your one question silently becomes several searches, and the answer is assembled from all of them.

What it actually citesPassages rather than whole pages, and increasingly from outside page one: 17–38% of citations now come from the organic top 10, against roughly 76% in late 2024. In AI Mode about 93% of sessions end without a click at all.

What we do about itPassage-level structure: one question per H2, a 40–60 word answer directly beneath it, and deliberate coverage of the fan-out questions Google generates around your head term. Worth chasing even when the click does not come — brands cited in AI Overviews see about 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks.

ChatGPT

74.8% of all AI referral traffic

75% share of AI referral traffic to websites

Where it gets answersThe Bing index plus its own crawlers, GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot. It only searches the live web on some prompts — about 54% of commercial-intent questions against 19% of informational ones.

What it actually citesRoughly 15% of the pages it retrieves. Reference sources dominate, Wikipedia heaviest among them, and pages with explicit question-and-answer structure plus inline source links are weighted noticeably higher.

What we do about itBing Webmaster Tools submission, GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot named as allowed in robots.txt, and every commercial page opening with an answer that can be lifted and quoted without editing.

Google Gemini

+231% year on year

11.6% share of AI referral traffic to websites

Where it gets answersGoogle Search and the Google index, with the same entity understanding that sits behind the Knowledge Graph.

What it actually citesSources Google already recognises as entities. A brand with a coherent footprint — one consistent name and address, matching profiles, named authors who exist elsewhere — is pulled in far more often than an equally good site without one.

What we do about itEntity consolidation: Organization schema with a stable identifier, identical NAP across every directory, real author profiles, and legitimate presence in the reference sources Google reconciles against.

Perplexity

Highest citation density of any assistant

7.2% share of AI referral traffic to websites

Where it gets answersIts own live crawler, PerplexityBot, with no training cutoff — it can cite a page within hours of publication.

What it actually citesAbout 22 sources per answer, several times what other assistants show. Around 82% of its citations go to content published in the previous 30 days, and Reddit alone accounts for roughly 47% of its top sources.

What we do about itPublishing cadence and honest recency signals: visible updated dates, current-year tokens in titles where they are true, and an earned presence in the forums your buyers actually read. We do not buy, seed or astroturf Reddit — it is detectable and it is the fastest way to lose the source.

Claude

+320% year on year — fastest growing

2.6% share of AI referral traffic to websites

Where it gets answersBrave Search — not Google and not Bing. A page can rank well in Google and still be invisible to Claude, and ClaudeBot has to be allowed separately from every other crawler.

What it actually citesDeep pages, almost never homepages: only about 3% of cited URLs are a homepage, while /blog/ appears in 56% of them. Comparison and listicle formats — “best”, “top 10”, “alternatives” — make up roughly 47% of citations, and a year in the URL or title about 24%. Practitioner blogs are cited heavily; major news brands barely at all.

What we do about itBrave indexing verified explicitly rather than assumed, crawler access checked, and a comparison layer built at deep URLs — the “best X”, “X vs Y” and “alternatives to X” pages your buyers read before they shortlist.

Microsoft Copilot

Inside Windows, Office and Edge

3.5% share of AI referral traffic to websites

Where it gets answersBing, plus Microsoft Graph inside enterprise tenancies — so it answers people while they are at work, in the tools they already have open.

What it actually citesWhatever Bing indexes and trusts. Bing visibility is effectively the whole game here, and Bing is a materially easier index to enter than Google.

What we do about itBing Webmaster Tools submission, IndexNow pings on every publish so new pages reach the index in hours rather than weeks, and Bing-specific coverage checks in the monthly report.

What we will not claim

Nobody can guarantee an AI citation, and you should walk away from anyone who says otherwise. These systems are non-deterministic — the same prompt can return different sources an hour apart — and none of them publishes its selection rules. What can be done is to make a site maximally citable against the signals that are measurable, then report honestly: one fixed prompt set, the same questions every month, tracked across every engine, and read as a direction over quarters rather than a number that moves daily. That is the report you get monthly, and it is the only version of this we sell.
